Using the Field Tag Feature to Identify Field Attributes

You can use the Field Tag feature to view the attributes for fields on worksheets and government forms. These attributes will help you understand the field behavior and field values. The information through the field tag feature can be used in designing TaxTransfer imports or exports.

Notes

  • The Field Tag feature is only available for government forms that are accessible from the Government View Forms list or tree. It is available for worksheets that are accessible from the Worksheet Tree view. Because alternate or detail worksheets are not listed on the Worksheet Tree, you cannot use the Field Tag feature to navigate to alternate worksheets or detail worksheets.
  • A field on a worksheet can be referenced using the description, field name, or field ID. A field on government form can be referenced using its field ID only.

ClosedFinding the Identifiers for a Government Form, Worksheet, or Field

  1. In a return, open the government form or worksheet for which you want to get identifying information.
  2. Right-click a field in the form or worksheet and select Field Tag to open the Field Tag window. You can also open the window by selecting a field, and then clicking Field Tag in the TaxTransfer group on the Import/Export ribbon.

Note: If you need the identifier for a specific field, you should select that field. If you only need the identifier for the form or worksheet, you can select any field.

The following information displays on the Field Information tab of the Field Tag window:

    • Form no./Worksheet no. The unique identifier of the form or worksheet.
    • Form name/Worksheet name. The unique hierarchy that identifies the form or worksheet when you configure your TaxTransfer imports and exports.
    • Field ID. The unique identifier for the selected field. The field ID does not change, even if the field is moved to a different location in a form or worksheet.

Note: The field ID is the only field identifier that can be used for government forms. For worksheets, a field can also be identified by its description and field name.

    • Additional info. Additional metadata for the selected form or worksheet and field.
  3. Note: The field names on the Field Tag window vary depending on whether you are working with a form or a worksheet.

  4. If needed, copy the identifying information from the Field Tag window by selecting an item on the Auto Copy Option list. Doing this will allow you to paste the information into your TaxTransfer XML documents. The options on the Auto Copy Option list are:
    • None. No information is copied to the Windows Clipboard automatically when you click into a field.
    • Form or worksheet name. The file path listed in the Form name or Worksheet name field will be copied to the Windows Clipboard automatically.
    • Field ID. The unique identifier listed in the Field ID field will be copied to the Windows Clipboard automatically.
    • Form or worksheet name and Field ID. The information in both fields will be copied to the Windows Clipboard automatically.
  5. If needed, you can navigate to another field, government form, or worksheet without exiting the Field Tag window. The identifier information in the window updates automatically. You can also click Refresh to update the window.
  6. Note: When you navigate to a different field, the information from the previous field is no longer retained on the Windows Clipboard. If you exit the return, your selection is discarded.
